Tour DescriptionOur Best of Rome Half-Day Tour begins at one of the most famous landmarks in Rome – the Spanish Steps. From here, it is all downhill walking until the tour finishes in THE most famous monument in Rome – the Colosseum! On the way, your Real Rome Tours licenced guide will indulge you with a history of Rome, from its birth to the twenty-first century, as you visit the monuments, piazzas, fountains and buildings that give Rome its unique identity as the oldest and most varied city of culture. The romantic Trevi Fountain, immortalised in films such as La Dolce Vita and Three Coins in the Fountain; remarkable mounuments and buildings from the age of the Roman Empire – including the Columns of Trajan & Marcus Aurelius and the Pantheon; the glorious Piazza Venezia, home to the symbol of modern Italy, the enormous Victor Emmanuel building; and Piazza Navona, the longest piazza in Rome, with connections to the Baroque age (with the famous Borromini church, St. Agnes in Agone and Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers) and ancient times. These are only the main attractions of the first two hours of your downhill walking tour, although there are a few surprises along the way as well! Walking past the Victor Emmanuel building in Piazza Venezia, the area of Ancient Rome opens up to you – with Mussolini’s great triumphal road, the via dei Fori Imperiali, leading you directly to the Colosseum. Your Real Rome Tours official guide will take you down this road, which passes the remains of the Imperial Fori (unfortunately greatly damaged when Mussolini built his road), and into the better-preserved Roman Forum - home to politics, religion, culture and everyday life for almost ten centuries. This area is rich in history, from ancient times through the medieval ages, and your guide will spend a good deal of time helping you to understand this culture, and its connection with the more modern city you have just left behind. Your tour will finish inside the Colosseum, where you will learn about the deadly games that transpired there, and the politicians who devised these games in order to control the mobs of Rome. It is hoped that, following this tour, you will not only have a better understanding of Rome’s history, but will also be able to recognise parallels in buildings from ancient, medieval and modern times, and therefore identify the influence of ancient architects on their later counterparts.
