Tour Description
The underground area of the Colosseum (Hypogeum) was not seen by the public in Ancient times, as it was beneath the arena where all the action took place – a sort of “backstage” area where animals were caged and gladiators sharpened their swords and prepared themselves for battle.
The Third Tier of the Colosseum offers breathtaking views of Rome through the arches peering outside, and a completely new perspective on the stadium inside. You can imagine, sitting here, what it was like to be a spectator looking down on the sometimes barbaric events taking place below you. These areas were closed to the public until very recently, and this summer, you have the opportunity to join an exclusive club of people who have accessed them!
Your Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome tour takes you to these exclusive areas, where, with exlusive access afforded to your Real Rome Tours licenced guide, you will also be taken out onto the arena itself. Here you will experience the fear and wonder the gladiators themselves must have felt when they first stepped out onto this stage, looking up at 50,000 Romans baying for blood. Think of the scene in the Gladiator movie, when Russell Crowe and his comrades look around the stadium for the first time, and you get the picture!
The third tier, never opened to the public prior to last November, offers a unique view of the interior of the Colosseum, but also an amazing panoramic view of all of Rome when you look outside. This may never be available again, so make the most of your visit and make visiting these areas of the Colosseum your number-one priority this summer!
Following from your special visit to the Colosseum – in which we skip the long public lines to ensure none of your precious time is wasted – your Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Tour continues as we take you to the Roman Forum. Your Real Rome Tours licenced guide will accompany you into the Forum itself, and into the buildings that are open today. When standing in the centre of the Roman Forum, like on the arena of the Colosseum, you cannot help but feel history all around you.
You will be surrounded by famous buildings such as the Rostra, upon which Marc Antony delivered Caesar’s funeral eulogy; the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina – the best-preserved temple to an Emperor and Empress in the world (we tell you why); the Arches of Titus and Septimius Severus; the Temple of Julius Caesar and the Temple of Romulus to name just a few.
Your guide will explain the history of the Forum, the reason for the Temples, Arches and Monuments that were built here, and describe the activities - and triumphal parades - that took place in this most sacred and revered part of Ancient Rome.
