Major Churches of Rome

Rome has more than 250 churches, as you would expect from the city at the centre of the Roman Catholic Church.

Many of these are great Cathedrals and Basilicas, others are small, out-of-the-way churches, but all are interesting and beautifully decorated and many are architecural masterpieces.

Apart from St Peters Basilica, which is so huge and houses so much art and sculpture that it demands its own tour, some of the major churches in Rome include:

  • Santa Maria Maggiore
  • St. John of Lateran
  • St. Paul Outside the Walls
  • Santa Maria in Trastevere
  • Il Gesu
  • Santa Maria Sopra Minerva
  • San Luigi dei Francese
  • Santa Maria in Cosmedin
  • San Pietro in Montorio
  • Tempietto

Of course there are many more, and we will be happy to put together an itinerary of churches for your own personal Churches Tour.

You may choose a walking tour of churches within the same area, or we can also organise a driving tour if there are long distances between the churches you would like to see.

Send us an email and a tour co-ordinator will respond to you with suggestions.
