MONEY MATTERS

Changing your money
You can change your money to euro at any “cambio”, which is a currency-exchange vendor.
They can be found all over the city and in most stations and the airports.
Your hotel can also change your money for you, but their rates are usually higher.

At the Vatican, visit the “Office for Pilgrims and Tourists”, situated on the left side of St Peter’s Square
as you face the Basilica (next to the Post Office). They will exchange your currency with no commission.

Accepting credit cards
Many shops will accept VISA, Mastercard and AMEX, while many others do not.
It is wise to bring some cash with you, even if you prefer to pay with credit card,
just in case it is not accepted. Restaurants will always accept credit card payment.

Bring loose change
Italy is still adjusting to the Euro, and cashiers do not like handing out coins in change.
For this reason, be prepared to be constantly asked for the correct change – especially in bars and supermarkets.
Some places will not give change from a large note for something small, so if you are buying a coffee and only have a €50, ask first if they can give change.

Also, as with most Eurozone countries, when the Lira was replaced by the Euro, prices were rounded up.
In Rome, on top of this, some places will overcharge if they think they can get away with it.
Always check your change and query the charges if you think you have been overcharged.
Rome Survival Guide
Withdrawing cash
ATMs are called “Bancomat”, and you will find these, also, all over the city and in the stations and airports. All of these will have the option to choose your language.

Pickpockets
As with every large city, Rome has its share of pickpockets.
Always watch your cash and other valuables when in crowded areas, especially on the metrò,
where they thrive when the trains are crowded and your hands are stretched as you hold the bars.
Another hot-spot is the Trevi fountain, again because it is so crowded you will not notice somebody
slip their hand into your pockets or purse. You should always keep your cameras and bags in front of you in such crowded places, where you can see them.
