Meeting Point Information

Ostia Antica is one of Italy’s oldest settled areas, with written sources claiming the port town’s foundation was during the era of Rome’s kings in the 7th century BC and archaeological evidence highlighting, that the earliest buildings date at least to the 4th century BC.

The importance of the city was based on its position, close to the port of Ostia and along the banks of the Tiber, so imported goods, brought to Rome by ship from Spain, Africa, Egypt, Greece and the East, could be stored here before being transported on to Rome.

Today, after extensive repairs and restoration works, you can visualise the city as it once was,
before the fall of the Roman Empire, the raids of the city during the Christian Era and the changing course of the river diminished its importance and led to the buildings being raided of all its valuable marble and monuments.
