Frequently Asked Questions

If you book a group tour with less than 4 people, you may not receive an immediate confirmation of your place on this tour – this is due to the minimum requirement of people for certain tour. Don’t worry, we do not request your credit card payment until we can confirm the tour has the required minimum. You will be contacted as soon as we have the required numbers and can pay to secure your place then.

If you have booked your tour through a third party distributor:

Please contact them directly to cancel or re-book your tour.

If you made your booking directly with Real Rome Tours:

To cancel your booking, please contact our Customer Care team by email.

You may cancel your booking more than 48 hours before the tour for a full refund of your tour fee. Please note that if your tour requires non-refundable entrance tickets to any sites, the cost of these will be deducted from any refund.

There is no refund for cancellations with less than 48 hours notice.

All cancellations need to be received by email – Real Rome Tours will not accept responsibility for undelivered emails.

Please allow up to 4 business days for your refund to be returned via the payment method provided at time of booking.

We recommend that you print your ticket, mostly because it contains meeting point directions, photos and maps to help you get there. It also contains our emergency contact number, +39 340 8521612, should you need it.

If you do not wish to print your ticket, you can also save it on your cellphone or tablet.

You can still join the group without your ticket, as we will have your name on the manifest in any case. However, it is highly recommended you print out for the reasons outlined above.

Currently, all our group tours are operated in English.

If you wish to have a tour in your own language, please book a private tour.

Either your tour guide or a tour coordinator will be waiting at the tour meeting point 15 minutes before the tour start time. They will be holding up a sign with the Real Rome Tours logo on it.

Please note that we ask all guests to arrive at the tour meeting point at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of the tour. If you have difficulty finding the meeting point or are delayed along the way, please call the emergency phone number +39 340 8521612.

Please note that we do not wait for late arrivals due to the strict reservation times for all the visited sites. It is the responsibility of all visitors to be at the meeting point 15 minutes before tour departure. Guests arriving after departure cannot be accommodated and missed tours or tickets cannot be refunded.

The tour price listed on the website includes all tickets, reservations and entrance fees.

Check our website for availability first. If you can’t find what you’re looking for there is a chance that it’s sold out or it may just be off-sale because it’s within a day or two of tour running time. In that case we can often still take bookings over the phone, so give us a call to find out: +39 340 8521612.

It’s really up to you. If you enjoyed your tour and feel like you received exemplary service from your guide, it is customary to leave a tip at the end of the tour. It’s not obligatory though and we won’t hold it against you if you don’t – nor will your guide!

No, unfortunately all our tickets and reservation fees are paid in advance of the tour.

You can pay by credit card through our website or the payment link we send you with the booking confirmation email. If you prefer PayPal to paying by credit card, ue can send you a request by email – contact us before booking your tour to request this.

Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate wheelchairs on our group tours for a variety reasons. For example, at the Vatican Museums, wheelchair users are required to follow a different route not accessible to those not in wheelchairs.

At the Colosseum, elevators are often out of order, requiring more complicated solutions. In most cases we can serve wheelchair users on our private tours, to allow the guide to adapt the route to their particular requirements. Please do get in touch with us before you book, however, and be aware that guests are responsible for propelling their own chairs – guides will be unable to do this.

Not on all tours. Please get in touch with us before bringing a stroller on the tour. Some sites will not allow you to bring a stroller inside, so the baby carrier backpack would be the best solution!

We ask that all customers bring photo ID with their date of birth listed plus your ticket in printed or electronic form. The photo ID is especially important if you have booked a child ticket, as the ticket office to the site being visited may require proof of age before issuing the reduced ticket.

For all tours involving walking, we would recommend that you wear comfortable shoes. If you’re visiting in warm weather (May – Sep) we recommend that you bring sunscreen, a bottle of water (which you can refill along the way on most tours) and a hat. This applies particularly if you are touring the Colosseum where there is very little shade. During the cooler months we would recommend that you bring a coat and possibly a rain jacket and/or umbrella (only mini umbrellas are allowed inside of the Vatican Museums – if you bring a large one you will have to check it in free of charge and collect it later).

A dress code is in place for entering places of worship and museums like Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and all the churches. No shorts or sleeveless tops are allowed. Knees and shoulders must be covered (both men and women). You risk being refused entry if you fail to comply with these dress requirements

Our tours run in any weather conditions, though luckily the weather in Rome is mostly good!

On some very rare occasions, when the weather is particularly dramatic, some outdoor sites may be closed (e.g. the Colosseum may close the underground area in the case of flooding).

On these occasions we will try to contact you in advance, where we have warning. This is one of the reasons we ask for a contact number where we can reach you when you are in Rome.

On our Small Group Tours and Semi-Private Tours, you will join a group of other travelers and a single guide.

The group size is limited to 25 people on a Small Group Tour (which is suitably priced for the budget traveler), and limited to just 14 people on a Semi-Private tour (recommended for the best experience without paying for a private tour)

Because our groups are so small, you’ll still find it easy to hear and interact with your guide (we use the headsets on all our tours).

A Private Tour is when you pay to have your own personal tour guide (and/or transfer) just for you. These are more expensive than the group and semi-private options, but can be tailored to your specific preferences, needs and requests.

Yes, we also organize all types of Transfers:
  • Both airports – Fiumicino and Ciampino
  • Civitavecchia Port
  • City to city
  • Inside Rome

As your booking confirmation will be automatically sent to the email address you provide us with at the booking stage, it is advised that you use a personal, rather than work, email address. Many companies’ firewalls block our emails. It may be necessary to contact you when you are in Rome, which we will not be able to do if you do not have access to your work email.

If you do not provide us with a phone number that is working when in Rome, we will not be able to contact you if you are running late for your tour. It is your responsibility to make contact with us in this situation.
