General

With our Ostia Antica Private Tour you can take a trip from Rome to see an archaeological site that was once the port city of Ancient Rome.

You’ll travel to and from the site by train, and then take a 2.5-hour walking tour of the ruins with a guide. Be wowed by the intact condition of ancient structures such as the amphitheater, Baths of Neptune, taverns and more.

About Ostia Antica:

This was an ancient Roman seaport, known for its immaculately preserved buildings, frescoes and mosaics, rivaling even the ruins of Pompeii. Enjoy this spectacular trip in the company of our professional guide.

The city’s name comes from the Latin word “ostia” meaning “mouth” because during ancient times, the city was located at the mouth of the River Tiber. Before archaeological excavations were made, the whole city was covered by mud and sand. This helped in preserving the city’s architecture and art works. Marvel at the black and white mosaics on floors of the large bathhouses, like the Baths of Cesaii and the Bath of Neptune and walk through the forum- the market place or public square of an ancient Roman City. Most of the buildings unearthed were preserved even up to the second floor.

Ostia Antica Private Tour

Your Ostia Antica Private Tour starts at a meeting location in Rome, where you’ll meet your guide, who provides your round-trip train ticket. Then hop aboard the train for the ride southwest of Rome to Ostia Antica, which lies near the coast.

When you arrive, take a 2.5-hour leisurely walking tour through the ancient ruins, noting their highly preserved state for which this archaeological site is so renowned. Dating as far back as the 4th century BC, the ruins include structures like an amphitheater, the Forum of the Corporations, the Collegiate Temple, taverns and public baths. Once home to more than 100,000 people, Ostia was the port city of Ancient Rome.

Walk along the main road, Decumanus Maximus, while your guide tells you stories about life in town. Admire the intact Roman statues that line the walkways; pass by the Baths of Neptune, crowned by a mosaic that depicts the Roman god of the sea behind a 4-hourse chariot; and take a seat in the amphitheater, which dates back to 12 BC and was built to hold 3,500 spectators. Shops and apartments make up some of the smaller buildings.

If you have limited time in Rome and wanted to see Pompeii but cannot fit it into your schedule or have already been there and interested to explore something new, then our Ostia Antica Private Tour is the best option for you.

When your time at the site is up, you’ll return to Rome by train.

  • Your guide will meet you at your hotel and take you by public transport to the site in Ostia. This trip takes approximately one hour, depending on the location of your hotel. The tour will end at the Ostia Antica site, after which you will have a return ticket for the train to return to Rome, which you can use by yourself later, if you wish to remain in Ostia after the tour, or your guide can accompany you to the train if you wish to return to Rome immediately.

Why book a private tour?

  • Do you have a wheelchair, or child stroller? No problem for us on a private tour, as we do not have to consider other people as would be the case on a group tour, but do please advise us of this in the comments section when making your booking, as the guide does need to plan the best route for you.
