Trastevere & Jewish Ghetto Walking Tour
A private 3-hour walk through Trastevere, Tiber Island and the Jewish Ghetto — Rome’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods, rich in local life, history and hidden corners.

Step beyond Rome’s headline monuments and discover two of its most characterful districts with a private guide.
This tour begins in the Jewish Ghetto, where layers of Roman, medieval and Jewish history meet in one of the city’s most compelling quarters. From there, cross the river via Tiber Island and continue into Trastevere, with its cobbled lanes, ivy-draped façades, lively piazzas and deeply local atmosphere.
Designed for travellers who want a more intimate side of Rome, this route focuses on storytelling, neighbourhood character and the small details that many visitors miss.
The exact balance of the walk can vary slightly depending on your pace, the day’s conditions, and whether any short interior visits are possible.
Duration: approximately 3 hours.
Full Tour Description (click to expand)
Cross the Tiber to explore two of Rome’s most characterful neighbourhoods.
Begin in the Jewish Ghetto, where your guide brings to life one of the most layered parts of the city — from ancient Roman remains and Renaissance markets to the long history of the Jewish community under the Papal States and beyond Emancipation.
See the Portico d’Ottavia and the Theatre of Marcellus, and hear how this part of Rome has preserved memory, resilience and tradition while remaining deeply woven into everyday Roman life.
Then cross via Tiber Island, the tiny island in the middle of the river whose story stretches from the ancient world to the present day, before continuing into Trastevere.
In Trastevere’s tangle of lanes, discover ivy-clad façades, artisan corners, hidden piazzas and the local atmosphere that has made this district a favourite with Romans and visitors alike. Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and its beautiful basilica may be included if timing and opening conditions allow.
Along the way, your guide shares the stories, symbols and local details that make these neighbourhoods feel alive — not only history, but food traditions, community life and the rhythms of the city today.
Because this is a private tour, the pace and emphasis can be shaped around your interests and mobility needs.
Duration: approximately 3 hours.

How customisation works
This is a private neighbourhood walk designed to show you a more atmospheric and character-filled side of Rome.
The route on this page is our recommended version, but because the tour is private, we can fine-tune the pace and emphasis around your interests.
If you’d like to linger longer in one area, add extra guide time, or keep things especially relaxed, we can absolutely do that.
If you’d like to change the balance, we can also adjust the route slightly — for example:
- spend longer in Trastevere’s lanes and piazzas
- focus more on Jewish Ghetto history and community life
- slow the pace for photography, children, or mobility needs
- include nearby churches or short detours if they fit naturally within the walk
We’ll confirm the final route and meeting details once we’ve checked your date and preferences.
FAQs
How much walking is involved?
This is a fully walking tour at an easy pace, but you should still expect cobblestones, uneven surfaces and time on your feet.
Where does the tour start and end?
The tour starts at Portico d’Ottavia in the Jewish Ghetto. It usually ends in Trastevere or nearby, well placed for lunch, dinner or an aperitivo.
Do we go inside churches or other sites?
This is primarily an exterior / atmosphere / storytelling tour. Short interior visits may be possible if naturally open and practical on the day.
Can we adjust the route or pace?
Yes. Because this is a private tour, the route and pacing can be shaped around your interests and mobility needs.
Is this suitable for children or older travellers?
Yes, in many cases. The pace is gentle, but it is still a walking tour on cobbled streets, so it works best when planned around the group’s comfort level.
Is food included?
No, but your guide can recommend places for classic Roman and Roman-Jewish food at the end of the walk.
Is this a good tour for first-time visitors?
Yes — especially if you want to see a more local and atmospheric side of Rome alongside the major highlights.
