The Colosseum in Rome viewed from the surrounding area

New Rules at the Colosseum (Updated for 2026)

What Has Changed?

Access to the Colosseum is now regulated through named, timed-entry tickets, issued under the authority of the Colosseum Archaeological Park.

This is no longer a temporary measure or a limited experiment. These rules are fully established and apply to all standard Colosseum ticket types, including Arena, Underground, and Full Experience tickets.

In practical terms, this means that tickets are personal, non-transferable, and strictly controlled.

What this effectively means is that, from June 25 2022, tour operators and customers buying tickets for the Colosseum, are required to provide the names of the users of the tickets at the time of purchase. Furthermore, these details cannot be changed, and the tickets are non-reimbursable.

Named Tickets Are Mandatory

All visitors entering the Colosseum must be issued a ticket in their own name.

At the time of booking, the following is required:

  • First and last name of each participant
  • Names must match the original photo ID (passport, national ID, or driver’s licence) presented at entry

ID checks are carried out at the entrance, and mismatched names can result in refused entry, with no exceptions on the day.

Once tickets are issued:

  • Names cannot be changed
  • Tickets cannot be transferred
  • Tickets cannot be resold

What This Means for Advance Bookings

Because tickets are name-specific and capacity is tightly controlled, Colosseum tickets must be purchased in advance, often weeks ahead in high season.

This also means that:

  • Availability is limited
  • Entry times are fixed
  • Missed entry times cannot be reused later in the day

If someone in your group is delayed, unwell, or unable to attend, the ticket for that person is lost.

Can I Still Book the Colosseum Underground Tour?

Yes — but with important conditions.

The Underground is the most restricted area of the Colosseum, with extremely limited daily access. As a result:

  • We can only request Underground tickets after receiving full participant names
  • Underground tickets are final once confirmed
  • They are non-refundable and non-changeable

For this reason, Underground tours are never “instantly confirmed” at the time of booking. We first verify ticket availability, then confirm the tour once tickets are secured.

Cancellation Policy (Important)

Due to the Colosseum’s ticketing rules:

  • Once Colosseum tickets are issued in your name, they cannot be cancelled or refunded
  • This applies in particular to Underground and Arena access

For tours that include Colosseum Underground access, our standard cancellation policy does not apply once tickets have been confirmed.

If flexibility is important, we are always happy to recommend alternative Colosseum experiences that offer a more forgiving cancellation window, subject to availability.

A Note on “Skip-the-Line”

You may still see the phrase “skip-the-line” used online, but it’s outdated and misleading.

At the Colosseum:

  • There is no ticket queue to skip
  • Entry is by timed reservation
  • Everyone enters during their assigned time window

The only line you may encounter is a short security check, similar to an airport screening, which applies to all visitors equally.

Why These Rules Exist

These measures were introduced to:

  • Reduce ticket scalping and resale abuse
  • Improve crowd management inside the monument
  • Protect one of the world’s most visited archaeological sites

While the system is stricter than in the past, it also ensures a more controlled and safer visit for everyone.
