Keep Driver for the Whole Day

For maximum comfort, you can keep the driver with you for the entire duration of your excursion. He will collect you from, and return you to, the door of your ship.

When you leave the vehicle during the tour to enter sites, your driver will stay in touch with your guide throughout, to know where and when to meet up with you when you are ready to hop back in!

With this option, you can choose to see more places due to the extra speed at which you will move around the city, or you can use the additional time to enjoy a more leisurely lunch than would be possible with the walking option.

YOUR FULL TOUR

Description

Your private driver picks you up directly from where you step off your ship in the morning. You will immediately see your driver, who will be holding up your name on a tablet or namecard.

To maximise every minute that you have available, we ask you to request from your cruise ship as precise a time as possible as to when we can pick you up. As most sites in Rome require timed reservations, we need to plan the time we arrive at each of these places precisely.

Most cruises use a colour coding system to designate the order in which their passengers may disembark the ship, so although you may be told that disembarking begins at 7am, for example, it may be closer to 8am before it is your turn, so it is important that we know this in advance.

We will be in touch with you to discuss this in more detail upon receipt of your booking, so you don’t have to worry about a thing, as we leave no stone unturned in attending to all these fine details!

Your personal driver will ensure you arrive at your arranged meeting point with your tour guide for the day, feeling comfortable and well-rested after your smooth transfer from Civitavecchia port.

During your excursion to Rome, you will always be in the company of a local expert, so that at no time will you be left alone.

You have the option of either walking the entire way, in which case your driver will introduce you to your guide before leaving you to enjoy your tour. Alternatively, your driver can pick you up and drop you off at certain points along the way to eliminate some of the longer stretches of walking – it is entirely up to you!

“Rome is not like any other city. It’s a big museum, a living room that shall be crossed on one’s toes.”

-Alberto Sordi, Italian actor

In this wonderful Rome in one day tour, your first stop is the Colosseum, where you will skip the public lines to go straight inside and enjoy dazzling stories of gladiators, crazy emperors and mock sea battles – all of which make up part of the incredible 2000 year history of this famous monument!

From here you will go through the Roman Forum, the major city area of the Roman Republic where everything took centre stage – politics, state funerals, business, triumphal parades of the Roman Army and the place for passing the time for the general population.

Next stop is the Pantheon, another ancient building in Rome with some fascinating facts and an amazing history. Followed by the Trevi Fountain – a world-famous Roman attraction, having made cameo appearances in several Italian and Hollywood movies. Here, your personal tour guide will let you in on a few secrets of the fountain not many visitors to Rome know.

It is a short stroll from the Trevi Fountain to the Spanish Steps, centre of the medieval Spanish district in Rome. From here we take you on the metro (if you have booked the walking tour option) to the Vatican side of the city, where we will take a break for lunch.

Please note that lunch is not included in the tour fees, however our tour guides can recommend the best places to eat locally!

Following lunch, we’ll head to the Vatican City, again with fast-track entrance so none of your valuable time is wasted. Starting with a quick tour of of the Vatican Museums, you’ll learn the history of the most interesting statues and artwork that are on the pathway that takes us to the Sistine Chapel. Some of these you would normally bypass without taking much notice, but your expert guide will let you in on Vatican secrets that will make you look at it with a completely new appreciation.

The Sistine Chapel is the gem of the Vatican Museum complex, hosting the stunningly beautiful ceiling painted by Michelangelo 500 years ago. With astonishing new details revealed with recent restoration works, these frescoes are an absolute must-see while visiting Rome. When you gaze upon their intricate details, keep in mind their beauty took Michelangelo 4 years of grueling work to complete.

The final stop on your day tour of Rome will be St Peter’s Basilica, the most ornate and largest church in Christianity. The Basilica is where newly-elected Popes are revealed to the public and where he addresses the public with special masses and celebrations throughout the year. Your private guide will take you to St Peter’s Square, where you can admire the magnificent Dome and take plenty of photographs to help remember your day forever. Your tour guide will then accompany you to meet up with you driver, who will take you back to your ship safely and on-time for your departure.

So whether you choose to walk all of the way, some of the way or none of the way – we can design the best Rome shore excursions for the Royal Caribbean cruise. Complete with incredible memories, inside knowledge and indescribable wonder.

Based on the time you are told by your ship that you have be back on board, we will know the best time for your departure from Rome – typically we allow 2 hours for the return journey, to allow ample time for any unforeseeable delays such as unexpected motorway traffic. This would mean leaving Rome at 4pm for a 6pm boarding, for example.

Your driver and guide stay in touch while you are out of the vehicle, so you do not need to worry about a thing, as we will make sure you are back on the road on time!

You will be dropped back at the same point where you met your driver in the morning, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free door to door service!

Note 1:

The itinerary below is for a walking tour, without the driver for the duration of the tour, only using the driver for the two transfers between Civitavecchia and Rome. If you choose to add the driver for the whole day, we will contact you to decide whether you would like to use the saved time to include more attractions, stay at the places on the itinerary longer, or include longer breaks, example for lunch.

Note 2:

As this is a private tour, we can modify the itinerary. We can start at the Vatican and finish at the Colosseum, for example, or include places not listed here. The itinerary you see here is based on our years of experience, timing our visits to each site when it is at its least crowded and avoiding the summer heat as much as possible. It has proven very popular with our clients over the last 15 years, but we are always happy to oblige with any requests for tweaks or modifications!
